Refusal of work in the visual arts has historically taken two main forms. On the one hand, there is the negative refusal associated with idle, unproductive practices and non-doing; on the other, there is the affirmative or vindicatory refusal which aims to redesign social contracts, values and identities forged by the alienated social division of labor. This article outlines the proposed typology based on some specific examples and investigates what forms the practices of unproductivity and disidentification could take on today, considering their limits and certain transformations in the modes of production and consumption over the last fifty years.
