The Power to Launch Worlds into the World: Insurgent Bodies and Rancière's Aesthetic Regime of the Arts

The article revisits Jacques Rancière's concept of the Aesthetic Regime of the Arts and seeks to discuss its potentials and limitations regarding the increasingly prominent debate in contemporary art about the political affirmation of identities and authorship. While the aesthetic experience emancipates by redistributing the sensible, its promise of universality encounters historical limits, especially for women and marginalized subjects. Heterogenous bodies, assuming its own authorship, seek to insert themselves into the canon, or rather, to displace and multiply it. We aim to rethink the link between aesthetics and politics by incorporating contemporary
ethical dilemmas without, however, reducing art to a representational function.
