Doing art and cinema (or “quasi-cinema”) with Hélio Oiticica

From 1959 to 1966, Andreas Valentin was a student of Hélio Oiticica’s, who taught him painting techniques, collage with found objects, and how to prepare his own paints using industrial pigments, dirt, sand and PVA glue. These lessons were another field for invention and experimentation in Oiticica’s own work. They reconnected in 1970, when Oiticica was settled in New York, after having shown his Nests in the exhibition “Information”, at the MoMA. In his loft on Second Avenue – Babylonests – and at his next home – Hendryxsts – on Christopher Street, they conceived and carried out film and photography projects. From personal experiences of the author, the procedures and results of those collaborations are analysed in this article.
