Abstract

This paper approaches spinning as becoming in the works of Judith Scott (1943-2005), an illiterate trisomic artist incapable of verbal language. The intent is to examine the intuitive nature and the temporality – the formativity prioritizes the process over the product. The temporality will be approached from the Bergsonian philosophy. Frequently, innate expressions are smothered by theoretical knowledge, by “very possessed ideas”, in Merleau-Ponty terms. Thus, deducing randomness is a mistake, guided by generality. Considering the originality of research on this American artist in Brazil, this reflection contributes to the diversity of perspectives on artistic processes and to the consolidation of critical fortune, in addition to providing a discussion on the possibility of considering art from a phenomenological perspective.

  • Solange de Oliveira, Universidade de São Paulo

    Solange de Oliveira é doutora em Psicologia Social pelo Instituto de Psicologia da USP e pós-doutorada em Estética e Filosofia Contemporânea pela Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas da USP. Há dez anos desenvolve pesquisa de fenomenologia estética sobre a produção de criadores iletrados artisticamente, que se expressam através da imagem prioritariamente à linguagem verbal. Foi docente na área de formas expressivas no Departamento de Artes Visuais e Design da Universidade Federal de Sergipe (DAVD/UFS) e atualmente mantém uma plataforma de conteúdo digital, o Ateliê Tessitura, que aborda a arte, entre a fruição e a reflexão existencial.
