Going out into the forest: yanomami strategy against Covid-19

Abstract

With the advance of Covid-19, the Yanomami of the Marauiá River (Amazonas, Brazil) are updating a traditional practice of mobility (wayumɨ) as a strategy of resistance and survival. Against the new pandemic, they leave the villages and take refuge in the forest, reversing the historical approach to non-indigenous people (napë pë), refusing proximity and conviviality. Until they left their villages, an interlocutor shared with us news and reflections about the moment in which we live and from these conversations we bring some thoughts on this practice and the possibility of thinking and learning from the Yanomami strategies to face epidemics (xawara).
