Based on a study of the 1996 city elections in Araruama R] I analyse the network of political gifts, favours and agreements perceived by the social actors of a community dominated by the politics of factions. I discuss the parties formation and action in this context of factional politics, emphasizing the importance of personal relations in the construction of political alliances, as well as the temporary and vulnerable character of party affiliation, given the precarious relation between the political patties in their legal existence and the groups really mobilized during the elections.Downloads
