El Esquife, a liberal havana newspaper in the first spanish constitutional period

This article studies the role developed in Cuba during the first constitutional period by the liberal-oriented press through the first satirical newspaper printed in Cuba, El Esquife, under the direction of the Cantabrian poet and writer Simón Bergaño y Villegas. A publication critical of the authorities and Cuban society, which led the captain general to try to exile his director to Spain. This newspaper also advocated for the defense of liberal ideas against the oppostion of the absolutist press.
