Anel Quebrado: a miséria do matrimônio em Koware Yubiwa de Shimizu Shikin

This article aims to present “Anel Quebrado”, a complete and unprecedented translation into Portuguese of the work Koware Yubiwa, released in Jogaku Magazine in 1891 by Shimizu Shikin, writer and women’s rights activist. Along with the translation and following comments, we seek to contextualize the work by offering a brief biography of the author, highlighting how her life experience resulted in the construction of an audacious text in light of Japanese social customs by the end of the 19th century, which questioned the position of women within marriage and their lack of free will. In addition to the intimate and colloquial atmosphere to sensitize women readers, Koware Yubiwa provides a delicate mix of autobiography and fiction, being one of the few materials available to try to access an author who left few records about her own personal life.
