The present paper discusses the significance of appropriate industrial classification schemes in attempts at comparing different firms, having as departure point the behaviorperformance paradigm of Industrial Organization Theory. As an empirical illustration, 36 firms included in the Brazilian cement industry were subjected to cluster analysis, with the goal identifying, in an allegedly homogeneous sector, those sub-groups of more similar firms which could justify external comparisons for analytical purposes. Using data on five performance variables and five behavior indicators taken from published financial statements, we have found, thanks to a canonical correlation study, significant and plausible relationships between groups of performance and behavior variables. In addition, a large homogeneous sub-group of 22 firms was identified, leaving 14 other firms as being too different for justifying valid comparisons with what could be called typical in the cement industry.
