The article tries to show how the understanding of
economic relations between education and labour market could be improved through an historical perspective, going far beyond the narrow limits of neoclassical approaches such as Human Capital Theory. It suggests that the importance attached to basic skills (or to vocational trainning) changes according to various technological patterns. The requirements are very different in scope and content and it is of no use thinking of a straight-away evolution but, instead, of 'ups and downs*. Whether these movements are also cyclical in nature, and connected to any central (very) long-term trend, is a fascinating question, but not properly dealt with here.
