This paper analyzes the political, institutional, and bureaucratic aspects of the politics of memory regarding the massacre of June 16, 1955 in Buenos Aitres city, Argentina. In order to assess the manners of commemoration undertaken by different governments—which included memorial markings in the public landscape—we describe the theoretical relation between the so called politics of memory and the constitution of places of memory about that event. Secondly, and focusing specifically on two plates inaugurated in the 1990s, we assess the link between the institutional actors who commissioned them on one hand, and the opportunities and the arguments that led to the public markings on the other. Thus, we view the plates as supports for the politics of memory about June 16 as well as a locus of the silences and lapses surrounding its emplacement, which seem to compound the existing silences in the academic and journalistic—and until recently, political—accounts of the massacre.Downloads
