Geographic scale and land grabbing: financial capital and grilagem in Matopiba

This text examines the methods used by finance capital to enter the land market in the Matopiba region within the context of global land grabbing. It explores the complex interplay between the parties involved in land control, focusing on the tactics used by foreign capital to gain access to the land market and the various forms of grilagem. The notion of geographic scale as social production is used to provide a framework for this analysis. Fieldwork, participant observation, and interviews were conducted in traditional communities. Technical visits and interviews were also conducted with representatives of government agencies, social organizations, trade unions, and agribusinesses. In addition, a literature review and data collection from websites and journals were conducted. There is no land grabbing in the region without grilagem. In addition to usurping public assets, fraudulent land grabbing deepens and perpetuates indiscriminate deforestation and dispossesses traditional peoples and communities.
