From veto to word: Love, Eros, and Prohibition in "Vita Nova" by Dante Alighieri and "Anunciações" by Maria Teresa Horta

This study proposes a reading of Vita Nuova (1293–1294), by Dante Alighieri (1265–1321), and Anunciações (2016), by Maria Teresa Horta (1937–2025), with a particular focus on the theme of forbidden love—a central element through which Georges Bataille (1897–1962) develops his theory of eroticism—in order to understand how amorous interdiction structures the poetic and symbolic experience in both works. To this end, a comparative approach based on literary criticism and the theory of eroticism was chosen, in an attempt to intimately explore the subtle plots that connect desire, impossibility, and transcendence in the books in question. In Vita Nuova, the impossibility of physical love and the death of Beatrice transform desire into a spiritual experience, reframing loss as a path of mystical ascent; in Anunciações, the relationship between Mary and the angel Gabriel establishes an interdiction expressed through the tension between submission and resistance, shifting the discursive center toward the feminine voice. It is observed that in both Dante and Horta, forbidden love—one of the structuring elements of eroticism, as formulated by Bataille (1969 )— shapes desire and poetic creation. In Dante, Beatrice’s absence leads to sublimation and subjectivity; in Horta, interdiction becomes a space of contestation and subjectivity.
