Italian identity among diasporas: Clashes between citizenship and culture in the search for better life conditions away from home

Abstract

In 2024, the “150 years of Italian Immigration to Brazil” were celebrated. Among the types of European citizenship guaranteed by blood rights, Italian citizenship was granted without generational limits until March 28, 2025. Taking many by surprise, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, explained in a press conference the need to “take citizenship seriously” by limiting the iure sanguinis to only grandchildren and children of Italians born in Italy and stipulating the need for real connections with Italy. This work, stimulated by the question about the intersection between culture, identity and citizenship, intends to explore in a comparative way the two great Italian diasporas of which we have news: the Italian immigration in the period of Unification and the recent migration of young people seeking financial stability and opportunities of growth outside the homeland. It also exposes problems about the monocultural position of the Italian government, questioning the impacts that the impediment of dual citizenship can have on the sense of identity of individuals.

Author Biographies

  • Gisele Salvador de Araújo, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro

    Holds a Bachelor's degree in Portuguese and Italian Languages from UFRJ (2024). Her thesis was supervised by professors Sonia Cristina Reis e Priscila Nogueira da Rocha and focused on Italian Literature - more specifically, on writer Massimo Bontempelli and the metaphysics present in his literary theory.

  • Sonia Cristina Reis, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro

    Sonia Cristina Reis holds a PhD in Neo-Latin Languages, Italian Literature from UFRJ. She has completed her postdoctoral studies at Università G. D'Annunzio in Chieti-Pescara with a scholarship from the CAPES Senior Internship Abroad Program. She is currently dean of the Faculty of Languages at UFRJ. She coordinates the research group "Female voices in neo-latin literatures". She is also a member of ABPI (Brazilian Association of Teachers of Italian), of the ANPOLL Narrative Theory Working Group and of ABRALIC.

  • Priscila Nogueira da Rocha, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro

    Priscila Nogueira da Rocha holds a PhD in Neo-Latin Languages, Italian Literature from UFRJ. She is currently a substitute professor and researcher at the same university, where she is developing a project on silenced voices within 20th-century women's literature under the guidance of professor Sonia Cristina Reis. She is a member of the research group "Female voices in neo-latin literatures". She is also a member of ABPI (Brazilian Association of Teachers of Italian) and of ABRALIC (Brazilian Association of Compared Literature).
