Contributions of the Bakhtin Circle to Genre Re-elaboration and Genre Mixing Concepts

Abstract

This work aims to discuss the contributions of the Bakhtin Circle studies to the concepts of genre re-elaboration and genre mixing in the scope of Brazilian Applied Linguistics. Through a literature review, we show how the genre re-elaboration notion was developed over the years by Araújo (2006, 2016), Zavam (2009), R. Costa (2010), S. Costa (2012), and Azevedo (2022). We also discuss the notion of genre mixing proposed by Lima-Neto (2009) and Lima-Neto and Araújo (2012). We show, thus, the Bakhtinian influences to both concepts. Then, we analyze both genre re-elaboration and mixing phenomena in a X/Twitter post, in which we verified genres from different spheres of human activity: school activity, template, list, game, and advertisement, whose purpose prevails on the post. We also noted that the genre mixing in these posts surpasses the pre-existing categories to explain this phenomenon since they present characteristics from (at least) three different categories but do not fit completely in any of them. We conclude that, despite the advances on Applied Linguistics’ studies about these concepts, it is still necessary to expand the research concerning the instability of genres and their relationship to each other.
