Abstract

This article aims to contextualize and review the book Motetti, Madrigali et canzone francese by Giovanni Bassano, published in Venice in 1591. The original edition of the book was lost during World War II and only one handwritten copy of 1890 is known, made by the German musicologist Friedrich Chrysander. Being the second book published by G. Bassano and one of the biggest books about diminution of the time, the work presents about fifty diminutions on one or two voices of pieces at four, five and six voices, mostly motets of Giovanni Pierluigi of Palestrina and madrigals of Cipriano de Rore. Giovanni Bassano was singer, composer and cornetist, member of a famous family of instrument makers, composers and instrumentalists established in London and in Venice, he had as his tutor Girolamo Dalla Casa, and succeeded him as director of instrumental music in St. Mark's Basilica.
