Innovation as a concept and basis for management practices: a case of a guesthouse in the municipality of Luís Correa, Piauí, Brazil

With a view to filling gaps in the practical and academic fields, this case study aims to investigate concepts and practices that enhance innovation in the context of an inn located in the municipality of Luís Correa (Piauí), in order to signal strategies capable of inspiring entrepreneurs and stakeholders in the sector. Using a qualitative approach and respecting ethical issues, the research included an in-depth interview (recorded and transcribed) with the owner of the company in question, in July 2023, using a semi-structured script of questions drawn up based on the literature review. The data was analyzed following the recommendations of the content analysis technique. The main results were that the concept of innovation in the entrepreneurs’ perception is in line with the literature and can be understood as the mentality capable of promoting novelties, changes and significant improvements that bring personal fulfilment and financial returns. Furthermore, in the last three years, the company has implemented new products in the form of tours and itineraries that promote the differentials of the destination in which it is located. To this end, it has entered into partnerships with local trade companies; it has also implemented cost-cutting measures and adopted integrated management software. A matrix highlighting the enterprise’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats was developed together with the entrepreneur in order to guide the development of an action plan. Finally, based on the case study, a list of actions that can be followed by accommodation businesses is suggested.
