Of the rigorously vague and its role in translation

In academic/scientific research, the vague is usually treated as a deviation from the exact. In translation theory, this view takes shape in the traditional concept of 'equivalence' as a priori sameness and at the level of the linguistic system. Against this view, we resume here an approximation between the concept of ‘translation norms’ by Gideon Toury and Wittgenstein’s later conception of language, also guided by the analysis of the Brazilian philosopher Arley Moreno. We argue that, in language tout court and translation specifically, the vague is logically prior to the precise. This applies particularly to the vectors 'adequacy' and 'acceptability’ that Toury presents in his “translator’s kit” — based on the concept of' ‘family resemblance’ developed by Wittgenstein in his later work.
