Abstract

Analyzing the question about what would be a classic, from Italo Calvino (2009), and the propose that one of the education’s objectives would be the appropriation of the classics, from Demerval Saviani (2003), this study: a) justifies the recognizing of the essay “O direito à literatura”, by Antonio Candido, as a “classic”; b) highlights the importance of that text to Literary Education; and c) presents possibilities for criticism and reinvention of the seminal essay by Antonio Candido. Methodologically, quantitative-qualitative data related to the “omnipresence” of the Candido’s essay are retrieved in articles, dissertations and theses dedicated to literary education.
