The article aims to discuss the opinion of Antonio Candido on the book Em câmara lenta (1977), by Renato Tapajós. The government accused him of publishing a subversive work that was against the National Security Law. The opinion in question was requested by the defense of the writer in order to show that it was not a text capable of gathering readers for the guerrilla, but a piece of fiction in which Tapajós makes a self-criticism of the option for armed struggle. The opinion of Candido was fundamental for the liberation of the author and the work. Our hypothesis understands that Antonio Candido intentionally elaborated a strategic opinion with a structuralist, non-dialectical bias, contrary to his convictions, with the greater objective of assisting in the liberation of the writer.
