Refractions of a poetic gaze: the sparse hero of Luís Vaz de Camões

Within this article we analyse the heroism manifested in The Lusiads, while deconstructing the idea that one sole hero figure can be found in this literary piece. We demonstrate that the descriptions carried out by Luís de Camões do not follow to the letter Greek-Latin models, such as the Odyssey, the Iliad or the Aeneid, given that the heroic behaviours portrayed – or expected – are spread among several characters (literary and extraliterary ones). In the wake of this heroic ideal’s refraction, the poetic discourse reveals itself to be multifaceted and polysemic, since the epic – and even lyric – gaze over the past serves as an example for – and as a reflection upon – achievements yet to come.
