Abstract

From the analysis of the presidencies of Lula da Silva in Brazil, a number of authors has been working about the similarities and differences with the leadership that would incarnate the former president, compared to the role played in the political history of the country by Getulio Vargas. The debate over the definition of the category of "populism" to frame both processes is unresolved. While regarding the Varguismo experience there was some consensus on the relevance of applying these categories for analysis, could not say the same about the presidencies of Lula, although some authors so conceived. In this work we approach a justification of the relevance of this comparison between the second Vargas government (1951- 1954) and the first Lula administration (2003-2006) and start developing our analysis around the political role of the conservative press in front of this two processes
