The samba and tango lyrics produced between 1910 and 1940 present the assidous presence of such characters known as “malandro” in samba songs and “compadrito” in the tango ones. Such presence is a constitutive contradiction for those musical genres, which constantly related to a national representation. This discrepancy occurs because those lyrics propagated a way of life, which was the opposite of the ideal citizen defended by those national States. This paper analyzes the compositions in which those characters appear in order to examine the clashes established between two different voices: on one hand, the ones sided with the marginal perspective and, on the other hand, the ones associated to the disciplining perspective of national States. This text also examines how topography relates to some aspects of these marginal characters’ identity and the national identity.Downloads
