Abstract

The present article seeks to present and comment on the translation into Portuguese of
the preface and the first chapter of the book Atipa. Romain guyanais (1885) by Alfred Parépou. The
work is considered the first text written in Guyanese Creole. Although titled a novel, Atipa is far
from the characteristics surrounding this literary genre. This book is a testimony to the linguistic,
cultural and social richness that this small country, situated in South America, held for years before
the appearance of its first translation into French in the 1960s.
