DISCOURSE ON METHOD: THE ENIGMATIC MEDALLION "IN THE CARPET"

Abstract

We will start the analysis following the tracks left by the puzzle in Henry James’ The figure in the carpet. We will try to unveil the weaving of the carpet, the strings which interweave the puzzling content precipitated by the poetic form. James’ poetic will take us to Machado de Assis according to Walter Benjamin’s habit of retaking the narrative once upon a time to try to apprehend the possible and critical it was like this in its constant becoming – the logic of poetic movement instead of the stiffness of a univocal reading; therefore, it has been like this. The structural excavation of James’ short story will prepare the forge to Machado’s Theory of the Medallion, in a way that the fickleness of Janjão’s father guides us to the structural movement of irony which dialogues closely with the authorial puzzle entangled by the figure in the carpet.
