The musician Florêncio José Ferreira Coutinho (Arraial do Inficionado, 1750 – Vila Rica, 1819) was a composer, singer and instrumentist in Vila Rica, currently Ouro Preto, during the second half of the 18th century and begining of the 19th. He also participated in several institutions of Vila Rica: the Dragões (troop with remuneration, cavalry regiment), where he was a timbaleiro and then trombeteiro-mor; working in the Senate, Opera House and the various brotherhoods of the region; and with his own ensemble working as a composer, singer (bass) and horn player. Due to the recent research on this composer (Ricciardi, Leoni, Castagna, etc.) and from my own research in primary and secondary sources, we analyze the situation of this homem pardo inserted in the society of Minas Gerais.
