Abstract

This article examines musical creation within the context of new forms of information and communication in contemporary society. The reflection is grounded in my professional experience at the historic Electronic Music Studio of Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) in Cologne, Germany (1990–1999). The text investigates the production processes of electronic (or electroacoustic) music from the early analog era to the transition into the digital age, with particular emphasis on the role of apparatuses. The concept of the “apparatus,” as proposed by Vilém Flusser, is central to understanding the communicative complexity of telematic society, increasingly shaped by the automation of media technologies. Apparatuses provide a universe of symbols through which we project thoughts, emotions, and desires. At the same time, they program human behavior, automate forms of thinking, and potentially inhibit critical reflection. The collaborative production methods developed at the Cologne Electronic Music Studio—based on close interaction among composers, technicians, and artists—are analyzed as an example of “dialogical creation,” capable of fostering critical awareness of the apparatus and its operations. The essay argues that electronic music can engage with apparatuses in unconventional ways—through a form of play. Such play has the potential to subvert the alienating functions of technological systems and to promote dialogue, thereby generating new information and conceptual frameworks that enable society to decode the programs embedded within these apparatuses.
