The following article, which is part of ongoing research for a master’s degree dissertation, seeks to talk about the interrelational aspects of professional coexistence between the conductor and the orchestra players, highlighting the makings of an authority in the role of directing. The theoretical foundation used for this article is based on the proposition made by Adorno that symphonic orchestras are a social microcosm in which the same power dynamics found in capitalist societies are present (Adorno, 2017). The bibliographic research hereby presented seeks to use the psychoanalytical aspects of Theodor W. Adorno’ thinking, that also expatiates his critique of culture and his work as a musicologist, contributing to his discussion about the reality of the professional orchestras and the collective musical praxis. Our goal is to trace parallels between how we understand the hierarchic relationships in the orchestra, and what would be the noteworthy points in a psychoanalytic point of view.
