Rose Marie Muraro: catholicism, feminism, publishing and censorship

Abstract

This article focuses on the censorship, by the Ministry of Justice, of Rose Marie's Muraro's books Women in the Construction of the Future World (first edition 1966) and Automation and the Future of Man (1968). We seek to understand the censorship vetoes in 1975, that is, many years after their release and when these works had already had wide discussion among the public. The censorship of these books, in our view, has to be analyzed as an attempt to coercion and demonstration of power by the dictatorial government that was feeling the pressure from the growing mobilizations both for democracy and by the feminists. This article is divided into two parts: 1) General overview of Rose Marie Muraro’s activities, with emphasis on her work at Vozes Publisher; 2) Approach of the themes of the two works, and contextualized analysis of the censorship veto order.
