The main purpose of the essay is to discuss Lotman’s conception of history as a semiotic problem of culture and, as such, submitted to different temporal scales of interpretation in different cultures. For this, it starts from Lotman’s inquiring about the limit of the Science of history based on the notion of the single truth supported by primary sources. Based on studies of typology of culture, he develops another analytical path: the critical metalanguage from which historical premises are understood as interpretation and the object of history is taken as a text. To demonstrate the importance of the inductive method, Lotman analyzes how in the context of the tsarist regime, insurgent movements operated transformations in Russian history, opening the way to interpretive possibilities not easily seen.
