In a platformized world, driven by datafication and algorithmic modulation strategies, how to have freedom and independence with so much concentration of media power? This paper is a conceptual exploration of the current media context and articulates three perspectives: the first makes a retrospective of the formation of information and communication monopolies since the 19th century; the second deals with platformization, algorithmic modulation and datafication, which are central in the digital world and in today's economy; the third brings the media ecology perspective, an approach that treats the medium as an ambience that permeates all existence. The result is the construction of a scenario that allows us to analyze current communication phenomena in depth and scope and seek ways to act with more freedom as individuals and society.
