Political fake news in Brazil: From Dilma’s fake record to Jornal Nacional’s deepfake

Abstract

The article reflects on manipulations of media visual images and feelings of the electorate based on the theory of change in humanity's way of thinking (FLUSSER, 2008 and 2009), from historical-linear time to magical-imagetic-circular. To this end, it cites and analyzes historical examples (BARTHES, 1961) in the US and national press, such as the case of Dilma Rousseff's false record on the cover of Folha de S. Paulo in 2009 (SOUZA, 2012), the narrative dispute between “Pavão Misterioso” and The Intercept Brasil in 2019 (SOUZA; PEREIRA, 2020), and the case of video falsification of the IPEC survey on voting intentions in the first round of the 2022 elections.
