Abstract

This study analyses the influence of television journalism on society's perception of the favelas of Salvador, Bahia, through stereotypical media representations conveyed by local television news, contributing to the construction of common sense and influencing the everyday lives of favela residents. Based on theories of stereotypes, structural prejudice, and the social role of journalism, the study combines a literature review with empirical data obtained through a mixed-methods approach involving 181 favela residents in Salvador. The findings suggest that the predominance of narratives associated with violence, crime, and social vulnerability contributes to the reinforcement of stereotypes and influences how these communities are perceived by society. Participants reported experiences of discrimination affecting employment opportunities, mobility, and social inclusion. The study highlights the importance of more plural and socially responsible journalistic practices and was complemented by the production of an audiovisual report presenting alternative narratives that challenge the predominant representations of favelas in Salvador's television journalism
