Routes of a drifting boat: the ethics of care in the performance of pain

Based on the experience of a body that, when moving, is interrupted by pain, this study investigates how contemporary theater engages with the vulnerability of the body on stage and the effects triggered by its spectatorship. For this, it uses the allegory of the Ship of Fools, as recounted in Book VI of Plato’s Republic, as a metaphor for reflecting on the stage. Given that shock is a sensibility rooted in contemporary sensory experience, this study questions how the fascination with the performance of the body in pain on stage risks turning pain into spectacle, which may lead to apathy in spectators. To address this dilemma, this study proposes an ethics of care that transforms the experience of spectatorship beyond shock.
