Abstract

Scholarly examination of carceral arts programming is both limited and selective. Academic research tends to focus on prison-based theater programs, music workshops, and creative writing courses, which are widely embraced and easily implemented. However, carceral arts programmers often face challenges within a correctional culture that is ambivalent toward their work. This study focusses on these programmers and their programs to understand why effective carceral programs, both in Canada and abroad, are not always able to do good.
