This article aims to begin the analysis of 22 of the more than 50 digital journalistic initiatives mapped by the project “Digital Journalism in Mato Grosso: Practices and identity construction in independent media”. To understand and analyze which words and terms most appear in their self-descriptions, we’ve made word clouds, investigating how the independent journalism produced in Mato Grosso constructed it’s identity. In addition to their own sites, we analyze initiatives that publish their self-describing only on social media. We articulate the discussion to perspectives such as those of Patrício e Silva (2018), Oliveira (2019) and Assis et al (2017). The idea of free and impartial journalism can be reinforced or questioned in order to admit that there are positions and opinions in the self-nominated independent journalistic construction.
