The free radio movement brought up a series of questions about broadcasting in the 1970’s. These stations emerged in contrast with licensed networks, introducing a modus operandi based on a language closer to the hearer, plus innovation in locution style as in the use of voice, music and silence, therefore paving the way to a broader sensorial experience. Decades later, it’s no use anymore to have a radio set to follow the shows: we have now gotten the podcasts. Digital hearing has freed us, and it is possible to listen to a podcast anytime anywhere, provided we have network access. Multiple experiences with language have come up, and this article aims at looking at them as far as free radios are concerned. To this end, we turn to McLuhan (1964), Darnton (2005), Machado et alii (1986) e Sousa (1997) to discuss podcasting as a kind of heritage of free radios.
