This article investigates the role of visual metadata attributed to the covers of e-books sold on the Amazon Brazil platform, which translates the logic of the algorithm and, at the same time, the preferences of the reader-consumer. The research adopted a theoretical-empirical approach, combining a critical bibliographical review — of Communication Theory and Neuroscience applied to Digital Communication — with empirical data collection, including records of the covers and titles of best-selling e-books on Amazon Brazil, and the application of questionnaires to 33 authors from the Hot Verso Brasil group. The results reveal the standardization in the titles and visual elements of the covers of the digital books that perform best on the platform, as well as the lack of knowledge, on the part of the authors, about the functioning of the Amazon algorithm and its influence on the reader's purchasing decision. For future studies, it is proposed to apply the eye-tracking technique to analyze the visual interaction of readers with the covers of e-books, extend the observation period and record the best-selling digital books on Amazon Brazil and empirically explore the internal functioning of the platform's algorithm, in order to verify how different variables interfere in the exposure and recommendation of books to consumers.
