Author Guidelines

1          GENERAL RULES

1.1 The V!RUS journal accepts for evaluation unpublished critical and reflective scientific articles or critical essays as a result of scientific research in all areas of knowledge, preferably those with a transdisciplinary approach.

1.2  V!RUS is a thematic journal. Submitted papers must clearly relate to the issue's theme, as expressed in the corresponding call for papers.

1.3 The V!RUS journal accepts for publication papers in text file formats (ONLY EDITABLE FILES), still images, videos, musical pieces, slideshows, architectural, urban planning and design projects and testimonials in audio files, which can be sent in either *.docx, txt, jpeg, png, mp3 or pptx. Other formats may only be submitted with permission from the Editorial Committee (See items 2.7, 2.8 and 2.9, below).

1.4 Two guest reviewers evaluate the work's academic quality and relationship with the issue's theme in a double-blind peer review process.

1.5 Neither the authors nor the journal are paid to publish approved papers. The journal has solely academic purposes, without any commercial interest. The submission, evaluation, and publication process is free of charge for the authors and the readers' access.

1.6  Submitted texts may be written in Portuguese, Spanish, or English and will be published in Portuguese and English or in Spanish and English versions.

1.7 In the case of texts submitted in Portuguese or Spanish, the English version will be provided by the authors and reviewed by the Editorial Committee or invited reviewers once the text in the original language is approved. By submitting their work, the authors agree to provide this version if approved (See item 3.6).

1.7.1 When submitting a work, the authors authorize the paper's publishing in Portuguese and English or Spanish and English versions.

1.7.2 Authors who submit papers in English and cannot translate them into Portuguese or Spanish must contact the Editorial Committee via email at vnomads@sc.usp.br, describing the reasons for this impossibility.

1.8 Before starting the submission process, each author must REGISTER and provide ALL AUTHORS' mini-bios, with a maximum length of 400 characters each, in the Bio Statement's box. Bios must strictly adhere to the following structure and contents:

  1. Graduation degree, higher academic degree, and knowledge area
  2. Academic affiliation and position
  3. Main research topics
  4. Research and/or professional activities related to the paper's subject
  5. ORCID

1.9 Please note that all authors must hold at least a graduate degree and be preferably postgraduate students or researchers. The name and contribution of undergraduate contributors may be highlighted in the body of the text or notes and acknowledgments.

1.10 The number of authors per article cannot exceed four people. For more co-authors, please consult the Editorial Board explaining each contribution.

1.11 Under no circumstances may an AI application be included among the authors of the work, as it does not meet the minimum authorship requirements since it cannot assume responsibility for the submitted work (see item 4 and subitems).

2          ON THE DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED

2.1 Two paper formats can be submitted to V!RUS: 1. textual work with inserted images and 2. works of image and/or sound with accompanying critical text. Each of them follows specific rules, as explained below.

2.2 Titles should not exceed 70 characters, spaces included.

2.3 All papers must be preceded by an abstract (maximum 200 words) in the same language as the main text and three to five keywords. The abstract must contain the theme of the article or essay and its relationship with the theme of the edition, its objectives, methodology, and main results.

2.4 The works whose principal content is textual must comply with a minimum of 4000 words and a maximum of 7000 words, references included, excluding the abstract and keywords. Papers outside these limits will only exceptionally be accepted, under the agreement of the Editorial Board.

2.5 Works in which the text is not the main support (art or architectural projects, films, photos, audio testimonies, etc.) can also be submitted to the journal and should be accompanied by a critical text whose length must range between 3000 and 4000 words, references included. Accompanying texts outside such limits will only exceptionally be accepted, under the agreement of the Editorial Board.

2.6 Only papers formatted according to the journal's template will be accepted for evaluation.

2.7 The accompanying text for works whose main support is not textual must be sent IN A SEPARATE EDITABLE FILE. It must present a critical reflection on the work, clearly relating it to the issue’s central theme, explaining its methodology, theoretical, design and/or artistic references, and theoretically substantiating its production process and results. References (bibliographic, filmographic, project, artistic, etc.) should be included at the end of the text.

2.8 In all cases, images, if any, should be inserted in the texts AND ALSO SENT SEPARATELY in image files (jpg ou png). The images resolution must range between 100 and 300 dpi. Each figure inserted in the text must contain an explanatory legend, with numbering and source (Author, year). A figure can gather multiple images, but in a single digital file.

2.9 Videos must be hosted on online platforms (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) with 720p HD resolution, available for download by the Editorial Board.

2.10  Images and videos must be authored by the paper's authors. Otherwise, written consent of the authors of the images or videos, or the rights holder, will be required with the paper's final version.

2.11 All texts must be formatted according to the APA norms (https://apastyle.apa.org).

2.12 All works cited in the text must appear in the final References list, and all works mentioned in the References list must be cited in the text.

2.13 At the initial submission, all citations and mentions that may identify the text's authorship, including references to authors' research institutions and projects, should be KEPT LEGIBLE IN TEXT and WRITTEN IN RED.

3          AUTHORS' LIABILITY

3.1 By submitting their work to the V!RUS journal, the authors reaffirm its authenticity and originality and assume full responsibility for the ideas expressed in it. The submission of a paper presupposes that, in case of acceptance, the authors authorize its publication in Portuguese or Spanish and English and its disclosure and dissemination for an indefinite period.

3.2 The authors declare that the work is original and has never been published in any other peer-reviewed academic journal, whether in print or electronic media, nor on any website on the Internet, including preprint repositories, nor is it currently under review in another journal.

3.3 The exposure of people portrayed in images provided in the submission is the authors' sole responsibility.

3.4 The V!RUS Editorial Committee systematically checks for plagiarism in all submitted texts, which is one of the criteria for approving the work upon technical accreditation by the Editorial Committee. Authors must ensure that all sources used to produce the text, figures, charts, tables, and all data presented have been duly cited, ensuring the originality of the text and the absence of plagiarism or self-plagiarism.

3.5 The authors agree to provide the text's translation to English, Spanish, or Portuguese once it is accepted. The Editorial Committee checks the quality of the text in the three languages, which is a criterion for accepting or rejecting the work. For a proper international disclosure of the work, the text quality in English should consider that readers of about 400 cities access the journal in over 60 countries.

4          USE OF GENERATIVE ARTIFICIAL INTELIGENCE

4.1 The V!RUS journal follows the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence applications in the production of scientific texts.

4.2 The V!RUS Editorial Board systematically checks the use of generative AI in all submitted papers. The journal accepts the use of AI for reviewing texts, but not for writing them, and also for improving images, but not for generating them. The Committee considers that using texts and images generated by generative AI applications constitutes scientific misconduct since they are not produced by the paper's authors.

4.2.1 The use of Artificial Intelligence applications must be made explicit in the text of the article or essay, as well as the name of the applications used, either in the Methodology section or equivalent, or, at the end, in a specific section entitled "Use of Artificial Intelligence".

4.2.2 For other cases of AI use, such as works whose primary focus is the study of AI applications, tests, simulations, and production of text or images, authors are asked to consult the Editorial Board in advance, describing and justifying their use.

4.2.3 The Editorial Board's and reviewers' detection of the use of AI without due explanation in the text is a reason to reject the work.

4.3 Under no circumstances may an AI application be included among the authors of the work, as it does not meet the minimum authorship requirements since it cannot assume responsibility for the submitted work.
