Résumé

O artigo examina as tendências da linguística moderna desde Ferdinand de Saussure e Charles S. Peirce no estudo da iconicidade na linguagem falada e escrita. O dogma de Saussure sobre a arbitrariedade do signo linguístico impediu a pesquisa sobre a iconicidade linguística durante décadas. Somente na década de 1980 a iconicidade se tornou um campo de pesquisa vital da linguística moderna (novamente). O artigo argumenta ainda que o conceito de signo arbitrário de Saussure não é congruente com o símbolo de Peirce e mostra que o ícone de Peirce difere do conceito saussuriano de signo verbal motivado por semelhanças entre o significante e o significado. O estudo mostra como alguns estudiosos interpretaram o interesse renovado pela iconicidade na linguagem como uma “virada icônica” na linguística moderna, enquanto outros se apressaram em restringir novamente o conceito de iconicidade.
