The West Coast of the Japanese island of Honshû bathed by the Sea of Japan and less celebrated in cultural terms than the East Coast, was the birthplace of some artists in the field of Japanese photography, among them, Shôji Ueda. Despite being an award-winning photographer in his native country and in France, with his own museum in Tottori, Japan, no article about him was found in Brazil. This study goes through his career in parallel with the trends of photography during the 20th century in Japan, pointing out some aspects of his poetics that contribute to the constitution of a unique style, known as Ueda-chô. One of these aspects, the Ma 間 spatiality in his images, is analyzed in some of the artist's works. The other, the oneiric language, is also discussed, along with a reflection on the photographer's relationship with cultural elements from the San'in region where he was born and spent his life.
