Food and nutrition integrated into the school curriculum

Abstract

Food and Nutrition Education (FNE) is a strategy to promote healthy eating and its inclusion in the curriculum of all Brazilian school networks, from early childhood education to high school, is essential. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the approach to Food and Nutrition in the school curriculum and aspects related to FNE. The research involved 269 professionals, including nutritionists, teachers, and supervisors from state and municipal schools in Brazil. Using a quantitative approach and a survey design, Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) was applied to identify associations among the studied variables. The MCA results revealed significant associations between the inclusion of the topic “Food and Nutrition” in the curriculum and its presence in the pedagogical project, the positive evaluation of related work in schools, the availability of support materials, and teacher training. This suggests that schools investing in FNE tend to promote a more effective approach in this area. The study highlighted the complexity of these relationships and emphasized the importance of future research to deepen the understanding of FNE practices in schools. Successful inclusion of FNE requires a collective commitment from all members of the school community and the adoption of consistent pedagogical practices.
