Abstract

The article consists of a stylistic reading of the poem “São Francisco de Assis de Ouro Preto”, by Murilo Mendes. From the observation of the fundamental values regarding to sound, word and sentence, we intend to verify how specific elements from the Christian temple can be translated into poetic discourse. As a cultural poet, Murilo Mendes establishes a fruitful dialogue between poetry and architecture, allowing us to see his earthly religion. This dialogue takes up shape mainly from the choice and combination of lexical elements which reconstruct the church in its essential features. The possibility of approximate different artistic discourses seems essential and productive both for literary and language studies.
