Entre o Oriente e o Ocidente: a problemática do duplo no romance Les Désorientés, de Amin Maalouf

Abstract

Compared to a modern Ulysses, our hero Adam suffers the difficulties of being a foreigner and exile in the French capital, as well as returning to his homeland - Lebanon - and confronting the ghosts of the past. The novel Les désorientés, by the French writer Amin Maalouf, published in 2012, presents from its title the lack of orientation, the need for a north by the characters. The double writing of the text dialogues with the characters’ personalities that orbit our protagonist character, sometimes inverted reflexes of themselves. Finding the traces of the double in the trajectory of our narrator-character Adam is what we intend in this work, as well as understand the various (re) encounters he lived along the crossing. Self-knowledge, learning, alterity are just some of the experiences suffered by our hero who migrates from East to West (and vice versa) trying, perhaps, to find himself.
