From the standpoint of Brazilian literary studies, one of the most
seminal aspects of Lukács’s theory of realism is to be found in his remarks on the aesthetic consequences of economic and social backwardness in peripheral areas. The following notes aim solely to point out a few elements of Lukács’s essays (from the 1930’s on) which deal with this issue.
