Abstract

Based on ethnography made in Florianópolis (SC, Brazil), this paper discusses the artistic conceptions of independent rock musicians and their relationship with record industry and the values of work world. Emerges from these relationships a dichotomy between"pure" and"impure", where purity points to musicians' inventiveness, spontaneity and authenticity, central values to rock, whereas"impurity" refers to financial necessities restrictions to their creative freedom and to musical impregnation by commercialization. This dichotomy is focused as related to Adorno's analyses of cultural industry and some critical views concerning these analyses are presented. The rock relationship with record industry technology is considered something that shapes rock as a musical genre.
