The catholic missionary activities with indigenous people in Brazil, since the inauguration of Conselho Indigenista Missionário (Cimi) in the 70’s, aimed almost exclusively to deal with indigenous people’s rights, always asserted as non-negotiable principles. In the last few years, however, we perceive a gradual shift of these activities as issues from the environmental movement agenda are appropriated. In this article, we discuss the case of the transposition of São Francisco River and the opportunity it offers to rethink the contemporary role of the Catholic Church among indigenous people in Brazil.Downloads
