Abstract

Victor Brecheret was a protagonist in the making of the 1922 Modern Art Week, as he played the role as an important forerunner of that event. Brecheret is the one polarizing the group of futurists in São Paulo since they discovered him in
January, 1920. The analysis of his works exhibited during the Modern Art Week denotes his excellent training in Italy under Arturo Dazzi and the important infl uence from Ivan Mestrovic. Italian critics heaped praise on his sculptures in collective exhibitions held in 1916 and 1919 in Rome, which confi rmed the qualities of the young sculptor, very confi dent and determined as regards his art, and turned Brecheret into an ensign or trump card of the modernists. Although he had been in Paris since July 1921 – therefore out of the country during the Modern Art Week – the group of his sculptures exhibited in the hall of the Municipal Theater was a sign of the remarkable present of the sculptor, who shaped the ideals of the modernists from São Paulo in clay and plaster.
