Abstract

The balance between universalist and relativist theories of human rights sets the background of a sensitive issue in the Islamic world: a systematic denial of the rights of sexual minorities. Due to their differences with western culture, Islam traditions have been widely held responsible for the conservative view the Islamic world has on sexual orientation and gender identity. Therefore, this paper assesses whether cultural issues can justify the suppression of the rights of sexual minorities in Muslim countries.
