Worsening of metabolic control in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus after one year of the COVID-19 pandemic

Objective: The aim of the present study was to assess metabolic control and food insecurity (FI) in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mullites (DM1) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cohort study was conducted between December 2019 and March 2021 with 118 patients. Metabolic control was assessed by estimated average glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C), total cholesterol (TC), HDL-c, LDL-c, and triglycerides. The Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale was used to estimate FI while considering demographic, socioeconomic, anthropometric, and dietary variables. Results: Adolescents accounted for 81.4% of the sample, and 61.0% had ≥ three years since the diagnosis. The majority (68.6%) had a family income per capita ˂ the minimum monthly wage, and 70.3% received some type of benefit during the pandemic. In regard to food, 57.6% reported changes in their eating routine, the main causes of which were social isolation (38.2%) and financial difficulties (35.3%). Increases were found in mean HbA1C and estimated average glucose, and 85.6% of the patients had FI. Participants with moderate to severe FI had higher HbA1c, estimated average glucose, and TC values. Conclusion: In conclusion, the frequency of FI was high and worsening of metabolic control occurred within one year of the pandemic.
